The uses of "ser" and "estar" are not that easy to explain and to learn, but these ideas may be helpful:
We use "ser" with:
* Permanent qualities: Carlitos es alto. Carla es bonita.
* Origin Jorge es de Argentina.
* Possession Este libro es de Carmen.
* Time Son las ocho. Es la una.
* Facts La fiesta es a las ocho.
And we use "estar" with:
* Places ¿Dónde está Julián?
* Feelings or states Carla está cansada.
César está enfermo.
¿Está abierto el banco?
Ellos están enamorados.
La calle está sucia.
Thanks Josie for the question. I hope you find this clear.
I want to welcome you to my blog. My name is Noralía and I'm a language teacher. I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina and I've been teaching face to face and online for a long time. I feel that a blog allows us to be part of a learning community, and then to be able to interact with others with a similar interest. My aim is to help you learn Spanish so I will post exercises, explanations, and everything that may be interesting to the Spanish learner.
